The Lord Is My Shepherd

David knew what it meant to care for sheep, yet he understood that even a shepherd-king needed a Shepherd. No matter who we are or how many people depend upon us, we still need the Lord to lead, protect, and provide for us.
Walking With the Shepherd
Psalm 23 begins with a relationship: “The LORD is my shepherd.” That little word my makes the truth personal. David was not merely saying that God was a Shepherd. He was placing his own life under God's care and direction.
Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11). He is the Shepherd David trusted. He knows His sheep personally—their fears, weaknesses, wounds, and tendency to wander.
Jesus also said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). We learn the Shepherd's voice by becoming familiar with His Word. The more Scripture shapes us, the more clearly we recognize what agrees with His truth and character.
Following the Shepherd does not mean every path will be easy. It means we do not walk alone. Jesus goes before us, sees what we cannot see, and faithfully cares for those who follow Him.

Read a few verses from John 10 each day. Before reading, pray, “Good Shepherd, help me recognize Your voice and follow where You lead.”
Pause and Pray
Lord Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd. Thank You for knowing me and caring for every part of my life. Forgive me for wandering or trying to lead myself. Teach me to recognize Your voice through Your Word. Help me trust Your care when I cannot see the path ahead. Give me courage to follow and patience when You ask me to wait. Lead me, protect me, provide for me, and keep my heart close to You. Amen.
